For the many of us that are greatly involved in the world-wide-web, eyestrain is a real concern. As business today has become more globalized and virtual, the wheeling and dealings of the current market are conducted primarily in front of a lighted screen. From emails to research, it is an unavoidable phenomena of the modern day, almost a necessity.
Perhaps you may have felt such tell-tale signs (as listed by the Mayo Clinic):
Sore, tired, burning or itching eyes.
Watery or dry eyes.
Blurred or double vision.
Headache.
Sore neck, shoulders or back.
Increased sensitivity to light.
Difficulty concentrating.
Feeling that you cannot keep your eyes open.
Truly, these can be quite inhibiting so here are some ways to keep your precious peepers in top order:
1. Be mindful of your screen time.
It has been recommended to keep your eyes focused on screen for only 20 mins straight at any given time. Set a timer, then take regulated 5-10 min breaks every 20 mins to change your pupil’s focus. Take a walk, stretch, or make a cup of tea. This will help prevent straining to your eyes and your body will thank you for it. Trust me.
2. Invest in blue-light glasses.
These glasses have been a lifesaver. The premise behind these special glasses is that it filters the blue lightwave that our various screens emit. Blue light in excess has been known to degenerate our eyes. So Amazon it over to your house and you won’t regret it.
3. Give your computer a circadian rhythm.
The circadian rhythm is the natural cycle of our body’s functions according to the time of day — essentially, hormonal signaling based on the amount of light your body senses. Programs, such as f.lux or night mode for Mac, dim the screen in accordance with the time so that your computer use is not such a shock to the eyes in the later hours of the eve.
